Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon

By Patty Lovell

Illustrator: David Catrow

Summary:

A girl named Molly Lou Melon is unlike any of her classmates. She is short and clumsy, has buck teeth, and has a voice that sounds like a bullfrog being squeezed by a boa constrictor, but she doesn’t mind. Her grandmother has always told her to walk proud, smile big, and sing loud, and she follows the advice of her grandmother to transform her supposed “flaws”into gifts. Even when the class bully at her new school makes fun of her, Molly remembers what her grandmother told her and she feels good about herself.

Lesson to Take Away:

Stand tall and be proud.

The author tackles bullying by reinforcing the encouraging advice by Molly’s grandmother and showing illustrations of how Molly embraces her physical limitation and overcomes her obstacle with confidence.
