Enemy Pie

By Derek Munson
Illustrated by Tara Calahan King

Summary:

When a new boy, Jeremy Ross, moves into the neighborhood, he becomes the narrator's number one enemy.  Jeremy Ross invites other kids to his trampoline party, but not our narrator. Our narrator decides he must do something about his enemy. He goes to his dad and asks for help. His dad pulls out a recipe that will get rid of enemies. But, in order for this enemy pie to work, his Dad tells our narrator, he has to spend a whole day with his enemy or else the pie won’t work. By the end of the day, Jeremy is no longer our narrator's enemy, instead is his best friend and enjoy the delicious pie together.

Lesson to Take Away:

Don’t jump to conclusions and judge other before getting to know them.

This book doesn't show an obvious bully and victim, but it does show the feelings that children might feel that could lead to bullying. Children are easily hurt or affected by changes, and this story helps them understand that life is full of changes and you have to be okay with that and give people a chance before coming to a conclusion. The topics being addressed in this book are friendship, the risks of judging people, secrets, and problem solving.
